7 Hair Loss Myths Dispelled

Fact vs. Myth

When running a successful Hair Replacement business, you have to be able to educate your clients.  Here is another example of how we communicate with our audience. We would love to help you learn to develop this type of relationship with your clients as well!

Perhaps you’ve been noticing a bit of extra hair in your brush lately, and like many, you may feel like you are losing your hair based on a myth that you’ve believed most of your life.

A red "FACT" and a red "MYTH" sit on opposite ends of a gray board balanced on a gray question mark. Isolated on white.

It’s time to debunk those hair loss myths and find out the facts as to what really causes hair loss and thinning and find out if you are really losing your hair!

Myth 1: If your hair is thinning, it’s because of your mother’s side of the family.

  • REALITY: Actually, scientific research proves that hair thinning can occur from either your mom’s or dad’s side of the family. Take a look at your immediate family’s hair. If they are losing their hair, you may likely do the same.

Myth 2: Only men suffer from hereditary hair loss.

  • REALITY: Ladies, sorry to break it to you but this is false! Women can experience hereditary hair loss just like men. Men tend to lose and thin in concentrated areas, making it more noticeable, but women tend to experience loss and thinning on their entire head.

Myth 3: Women lose their hair after pregnancy and during and after menopause.

  • REALITY: While that’s definitely an accurate piece of information, women can begin to lose their hair in their 20’s and even earlier in some instances.

Myth 4: If you’re stressed, your hair will permanently fall out.

  • REALITY: During stressful times, hair may fall out, but in most cases it should grow back.

Myth 5: If you are are losing hair, you are experiencing hereditary hair loss.

  • REALITY: Did you know that 100+ hairs can fall out daily throughout the hair’s natural “resting” (non-growing) phase? If you’re losing hair constantly and it’s not growing back, then you could be onto something.

Myth 6: Shampooing frequently will make your hair fall out.

  • REALITY: Since shampooing removes residues and build-up, hair will actually look fuller. It does not actually cause hair loss.

Myth 7: Chemicals, from coloring your hair, will permanently damage hair and cause loss.

  • REALITY: While chemicals can weaken hair and cause breakage, unless the hair follicle has been damaged by chemical treatment, which rarely happens, loss is temporary.

Hopefully you’ve learned a fact or two from these hair loss myths and can help educate others as well. It’s never too late to learn how you can prevent or find the right solution for hair loss.

Recognizing the 5 Signs of Hair Loss

Should You Be Concerned?

When running a successful Hair Replacement business, you have to be able to educate your clients.  Here is another example of how we communicate with our audience. We would love to help you learn to develop this type of relationship with your clients as well!

Recognizing the 5 Signs of Hair Loss

A woman’s hair is important to her. It is the frame that brings together all of the elements of her face. Hair has a language all of its own – it tells the world whether you’re casual or businesslike, playful or serious. So looking down at her brush, and, for the first time, noticing strands of hair can send a woman into a panic. Immediately, she might wonder, “Am I experiencing hair loss, or merely losing a few strands?”

The good news is there are some signs and questions you can ask yourself to determine if you are losing more hair than you should. I have been a hair loss specialist for over 30 years and have put together a list of five telltale signs that will help you determine if your hair loss is something to fret about – or not. Ask yourself these questions:

  1. When I wake up in the morning, is there hair on my pillow or in my bed?
  2. Do I look in the mirror on a regular basis and wonder how I’m going to keep people from noticing the hairless spots on my scalp?
  3. Despite my committed use of expensive and guaranteed-to-grow products (everything from shampoo to scalp stimulators), does my hair still not grow past a certain point?
  4. Have I, or a loved one, watched hair come out due to Alopecia, Trichotillomania, Chemotherapy, or another illness and felt powerless to do anything about it?
  5. Am I losing more than 100 hairs per day?

If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, then you are a likely candidate for treatment. My team and I understand that when discussing hair loss, it’s about so much more than that. It’s also about the loss of confidence, self-image, and identity. We can help recommend the right treatment solutions to help prevent further hair loss or help restore the hair that has already been lost.

How to Tackle Your Hair Loss: Part 1

Finding Solutions

When running a successful Hair Replacement business, you have to be able to educate your clients.  Here is another example of how we communicate with our audience. We would love to help you learn to develop this type of relationship with your clients as well!

Treating your hair loss starts at home. The products you use at home will change. The way you take care of your hair and even the manner in which you do many standard things in your life will change to accommodate the needs of your hair. I want you to begin to chart your course of treatment and monitor your needs in order to have the most effective outcome.

About a week before clients come in to see us at the Jeffrey Paul Salon, we have them gather and count the hair that falls out during that week. When they come in, we conduct an analysis using a microscopic video monitoring of their scalp, the follicles, the openings where hair emerges from the scalp, and other factors, in order to measure and put a value on the stage of their loss so that they can understand the steps they will need to take to alter the situation. If they collect hair they’ve lost and put it in a clear plastic baggie, daily, for a week, they can see at a glance whether they are losing more or less hair as time goes on.

Understanding what has actually happened that brought about some of these issues is important before beginning the next steps of tackling your hair loss. In part two, I will discuss the next steps to consider when evaluating your clients’ specific hair loss with Trichology, so please stay tuned.

Giving You Peace of Mind

When running a successful Hair Replacement business, you have to be able to educate your clients.  Here is another example of how we communicate with our audience. We would love to help you learn to develop this type of relationship with your clients as well!

My guests, or women who have never worn hair before, always ask if it is secure or if it will come off? I have worked for years to find and perfect the best of the best in attachment methods so that a women can feel secure in knowing that her hair addition will stay secure even with an active lifestyle.

Here is a tip that will not only help add even more security, in between your service appointments, but also add a little extra peace of mind and confidence…

  • After getting out of the shower, take your Friction Free Towel and press down on the top of your hair addition from front to back, side to side, and in the front hairline for 30 seconds each.

By doing this you will not only help to absorb the water out of your hair addition, but also help to keep your hair secure and looking beautiful!

4 Benefits to Having Two Hairpieces

When running a successful Hair Replacement business, you have to be able to educate your clients.  Here is another example of how we communicate with our audience. We would love to help you learn to develop this type of relationship with your clients as well!

Hair is a fabric. Just like with your favorite outfit or that great pair of leather boots you wear… each fabric has a life expectancy based on the amount of use or overuse you put into it. The same is true for your hair replacement system. There’s no exact timeline as to when someone needs a new system or how long a hair system lasts. It varies on the way you wear and take care of your hair.

For the guest who has selected the extended wear attachment option, the wear and tear that goes into wearing a system everyday is quite extensive. Think about it, even your most favorite outfit that you may wear 2 times a week (I won’t tell) gets taken on and off. The extended wear attachment method give the wearer the opportunity to live a more uncompromised life style because the hair system is attached. At the same time it can also cause a hair system to wear even faster.

Whether you have extensions, an integration system or a full hair replacement system, I highly suggest investing in two hairpieces. Why, you may ask? Here are a few of the great benefits having two hair systems, that you are able to alternate each month, can give you:

1. Longer Life of Unit – Because you are giving each unit a month of “time off” from your head, it gives the system the ability to have a break from the normal month’s wear. The life of each hair system is different for everyone, but in some cases we have seen alternating systems can add up to 6 months of life expectancy.

2. Shorter Service Time – My team works hard to not only pamper our guests, but also take care of their needs in a timely fashion. By having two units it allows my team to prepare your hair system in advance and in some cases cut up to 30 minutes off your service time.

3. Insurance Policy – All hair systems will lose hair over the course of their life. In some cases guests have torn or damaged their hair system, or waited too long and the system has lost too much hair. Because the production of a custom system takes at least 12 weeks, the guest could be stuck in a tricky situation. With two systems it gives the guest the confidence to know that they will never fear being without their hair.

4. Consistency – Hair is always changing and no two hair systems will ever have the same hair. By ordering two hair systems at the same time, it ensures that both systems will be made with the closest matched hair that is possible. This prevents from having slight variations in color or texture of the hair. This also ensures the most natural look possible for a guest.

And remember, above everything else, similar to investing in a high-quality piece of clothing, it’s imperative that you follow the given steps of maintenance to keep your hair system looking as natural as possible and lasting as long as possible.

Camouflaging Thinning Hair

Feel Confident with this Quick Tip

When running a successful Hair Replacement business, you have to be able to educate your clients.  Here is another example of how we communicate with our audience. We would love to help you learn to develop this type of relationship with your clients as well!

Spring is the perfect time to learn how camouflaging your thinning hair can work for you. I understand that it can be difficult to hide a bare scalp, especially during the spring months when the weather turns nice and we’re no longer wearing heavy clothing or hats. My camouflaging trick will keep you feeling confident and gorgeous, just like a spring flower!

Now, there are a few barriers when covering up.  Most of us are running around on a daily basis, our bodies sweat, and with the spring season comes rain. These factors can make it difficult to hide hair loss or thinning. Some camouflage makeups run-off in these instances, but unlike those other products, the physician-developed makeup I suggest using actually seals in place, allowing you to go about your day without any worry and help you continue looking beautiful on the inside and out!
